Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) Policy including
Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is our comprehensive curriculum for supporting children's personal development, health, wellbeing and understanding of relationships.
We are required by law to teach Relationships Education and Health Education to all primary-aged pupils. We deliver these statutory subjects within our broader PSHE programme. Where we teach about human reproduction (sex education), we do so in line with the principles and approach of the 2025 Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) statutory guidance, in which sex education itself remains non-statutory (but recommended) in primary schools.
Our PSHE curriculum also includes age-appropriate aspects of economic education, preparing children to understand spending, saving and the world of work, and citizenship education including British Values, helping children understand their rights, responsibilities and role in society.
At All Saints’ Primary School PSHE is integral to our whole curriculum in ensuring all children are happy, safe and confident so to maximise their learning potential and be equipped with the skills to succeed in the wider world.
The PSHE Curriculum that we use at All Saints' is called ‘Jigsaw’.
Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE is a teaching and learning programme which has a strong focus on emotional and mental health and wellbeing. There are six units (Puzzles), each with six lessons:

Every year group studies the same puzzle at the same time which allows for whole school themes to be shared and celebrated across the school. Year groups are taught one lesson per week, in an age- and stage-appropriate way to meet the children’s needs.

Teachers will also consider those concepts which are current and relevant for modern Britain and specific classes/pupils and incorporate these into daily practise.
Throughout the year we enhance our curriculum with other activities which relate to specific days, weeks, world events. E.g. Anti-bullying week, Internet Safety Day, Mental Health Week, Charity work, community projects.
The Department for Education has made changes to relationships and sex education following a nationwide consultation which school must be teaching by the September 2026. All schools are required to comply with the updated requirements. The statutory guidance can be found at:
The guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships. Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up will give our children the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and help them take responsibility for their own well-being.
From September 2020, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), along with Health Education, will be statutory, and form part of the National Curriculum. In line with these changes the Jigsaw program we use has been updated to include the statutory RSHE (Relationships Education, Sex Education and Health Education) which we would like to use. However this means we need to review our RSE curriculum and policy.
From Monday 23rd November to Monday 14th December, 2020 we consulted with you to help inform our schools’ decisions on when and how certain content is covered, and enable us to reach a general consensus. Your views were very important to us and we will let you know the outcome of the process as soon as we can. Please note the consultation does not mean we can change curriculum content as school is legally required to teacher the National Curriculum, however the right to withdraw from SOME lessons is explained in the leaflet which accompanies this letter and the policy.
Once we have considered all the feedback, the draft policy PHSE & RSE Policy and proposed curriculum will be shared on the website.
